Day 5 - Lazy Day in the 'Dam

Well after an amazing night of fun and debauchery, you can only imagine how tough it was to get up this morning! Our hangovers didn't let us out of the hotel until about noon when we headed straight towards the most relaxing activity we could think of, a canal boat ride around the city. The guided tour was spoken in 4 languages aboard the boat so we had to be very careful only to chat during the foreign language portions. Apparently Amsterdam contains 600,000 bicycles at any given time and there are over 150,000 thefts reported each year. Near the central station there was actually a bike parking garage that can hold 2,500 bikes! This city was made for bikes and here they definitely have the right of way, you don't want to be caught doing the ultimate tourist faux paw and stepping out into the red asphalt designated bike lane to take a picture of a special building. Poor Danielle almost got taken out twice! Thankfully we were there to save her swiftly!

Following our relaxing tour of the canals of Amsterdam, we were ready to get busy and ducked into one of the local "coffee shops." We enjoyed the local fare and the beautiful Moroccan atmosphere. Once we were good and ready and had mentally prepared ourselves, we headed over to the red light district. You think to yourself, ah no big deal, I've seen hookers and the likes in Vegas before, but there is something about the fact that you can see these woman's beds behind them that makes it so much more real. It just makes it a bit more tangible and unbelievable than I've ever experienced before. As a woman, I look at some of these girls and they really are so good looking and I ask myself, how did they get here? What is their story? The three of us all agreed that if one of these hookers ever became literate enough to write a book, we'd certainly line up to grab it hot off the press. You walk through the streets and alleyways, wanting to ask them the most absurd questions, knowing they'd never give you a real answer. You can't take pictures and if you do, the pimps will come rushing out from the doorways and you and your camera will end up in the canal. A point of interest about these high class hookers is that in fact they're not all Dutch, they're from all over the world. Even as far as Australia...guess you have to climb the hooker ranks before you get to lay amongst the finest in the Amsterdam Red Light District.
